The Zeiss Humphrey Automated Peripheral Visual Field Analysers (now made by Carl Zeiss Meditec) are well known amongst ophthalmologists and eye clinics as one of the standard eye tests.  An essential piece of kit they map a patient’s entire scope of vision (central and peripheral) to detect blind spots (scotomas), glaucoma, neurological damage, or retinal diseases.

Due to the cost of replacing this equipment, many ophthalmologists look to extend their working life.  With the modern requirement of having access to electronic reports, many have to print out the results of the test and then scan them in at a PC, wasting valuable time and taking the risk that the printout is not of sufficient quality to scan well (as well as hoping the scanner works first time).

The HFA 720 & 740i models are well known and normally connect via a parallel port to a HP printer.  We have assisted several eye clinics now in adding a Retro-Printer module in place of the original HP printer, allowing the clinic to automatically access a PDF version of the printout over the network, thus allowing immediate electronic filing and saving paper and time as well as providing a much better quality report than a scan of the original printed version.

No more messing about spending time scanning poor quality printouts, fighting with paper jams and replacing inks.  Even better is the space saved – with the Retro-Printer module measuring just 4″ x 3″ x 2″ – removing the need for a bulky dedicated printer in the examination room can be a real bonus.
A new optional feature, in response to Optician requests is to parse the incoming data and extract the patient name and eye being tested (if just one) and use that to generate the filename – making it much easier to keep track of the electronic copies without having to manually rename them.

Of course, if the physical printout is still required, a modern USB or network printer can be connected to the Retro-Printer as well.
