Optimising the Retro-Printer for Speed
Now that we have moved to the 64-bit Raspberry Pi operating system and assumed a quad-core processor, we have managed to squeeze even more speed out of the Retro-Printer software.
This should help deal with edge cases, where the speed could impact the data collection and processing. We are therefore recommending that all users upgrade to the latest v3.37c Software.
In particular, we have now changed the way that the software works in order to use the quad cores of the CPU so that the following architecture is set up by default:
CORE 0-3: Normal Raspberry processing – system programs
CORE 1: Retro-Printer Capture Program
CORE 2: CUPS
CORE 3: Conversion Software
This has significantly increased the speed of data capture and conversion. We are hopeful that this will overcome issues where machines seem to time out because the printer takes too long.
If you want to try this on your system, get in touch and we can guide you through the upgrade process.
